Introduction and questions about london expo [Mar. 20th, 2010|02:31 pm]
Cosplay in the UK & Europe!

I have just found this community so I thought I would post and introduce myself! My name is Lucy Edkins and I love cosplaying!
I live in stratford upon avon and attend meets and expos :) However I am thinking of going to the london expo in may and it's going to be my first time going to a london expo (normally it's too far away so I go to the telford expos) . I was wondering what is the cheapest or best hotel to stay at? and what is the cheapest way to get there via public transport?

Here are some of my cosplays if you feel like checking them out: http://luckylucy73.deviantart.com/

thanks x

Hi Lucy!

Right, public transport-wise, the ExCeL Centre is just outside the Custom House DLR station - you can get on the DLR at either Bank (Central and Northern lines) or Tower Gateway (District and Circle lines to Tower Hill, then go outside and cross the road) in Central London, and make sure you're going towards Beckton. Unfortunately, since London Expo is usually held on bank holiday weekends, there are often engineering works going on and this can screw up either the Central tube lines or parts of the DLR, and sometimes both. So check in advance to see what's happening! If the worst happens then the ExCeL Centre is only about 5-10 minutes' walk from Canning Town, which is on both the DLR and the Jubilee Line and is served by several bus services. The walk is very well signposted so you won't get lost, and last year when the DLR was shut down over the Expo weekend, they also laid on a free bus service that got you from Canning Town to ExCeL. If you're planning to go into central London after the Expo is over then get a travelcard for zones 1-4 (or a pay-as-you-go Oyster card).

The hotels in the immediate area are the Custom House hotel, the Ibis, the Novotel and the Premier Travel Inn. Since it's Docklands, they're all pretty expensive I'm afraid, and they tend to book up very quickly. The Custom House certainly used to be the cheapest, although I've heard they've pushed their prices up, and people's experiences in there have been very variable (I never had any problems in there, but a lot of people have found it a bit grotty). The PTI seems to be the most popular, and it is a very nice hotel, but it's much further away from the ExCeL Centre than the others and it's pretty expensive. If you've got some friends you can travel with, then splitting the cost of a room is a good idea - the rooms in the Custom House are a bit small but the other three are all fairly sizeable so you could fit four people in easily enough.

There are also some apartments in the area that you can hire for the weekend, but I've never booked one of those so I'm not entirely sure how they work.

I hope that helps! :)

I think blueskycomplex has already covered everything, however one other hotel you could stay at is the Travelodge. You can either stay at the London City Airport Travelodge which is a 10-15 minute walk away (apparently, it's my first time staying there myself! - I usually travel back and forth both days ^^; ) or the Docklands Travelodge which is a DLR journey away. It's around £59 per night which is a very reasonable price if you ask me, nice rooms too, I stayed in one in Northampton and it was quite nice for the price!

Last time I checked though they were both nearly full, so I would check and book fast if there are still spaces left!

I hope you can make it and enjoy yourself there =)
